The purpose of sleep apnea treatment is to open your airway and allow you to breathe more easily at night. Many instruments can aid in this process. CPAP machines, mouth appliances, and specially made pillows are among the most common solutions. At Mericle Dentistry in Simons Island, GA, we understand how complicated sleep apnea may be, and we design sleep apnea treatments for your unique needs.
Sleep apnea patients have increased muscle relaxation during sleep, which can obstruct the airways and cause breathing pauses. Your oxygen levels fall when your breathing cycle is disturbed. If you stop breathing, even for a few moments, you will most certainly awaken from your slumber abruptly. Snoring, loud noises, or waking up gasping for air are all classic symptoms of sleep apnea.
Mouth Devices
You can have these customized or purchase them off the shelf.
Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)
This appears to be a mouth guard worn by athletes. It snaps over your upper and lower teeth. Hinges allow your lower jaw to move forward, keeping your tongue and soft palate stable and your airway open as you sleep.
Tongue Retaining Device
This works similarly to a splint in that it holds your tongue in place to keep your airway open. It is not as commonly prescribed by doctors as the MAD. It can be more difficult to adjust to and less comfortable.
Position Pillows
They can be used with or without a CPAP machine. They are available in various forms, including a wedge shape that lifts your upper body.
Sleeping on your back with your body elevated from the waist up may help keep your airway from closing and, as a result, improve your condition.
CPAP
These machines make use of a mask that fits over your nose or your nose and mouth. It blows air at a pressure that maintains your airway open while you sleep. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the appropriate pressure to use and how to set it on the machine.
Nerve Stimulation Devices
A hypoglossal nerve stimulator is a tiny device that can help when your tongue and other tissue in your throat fold back and block your airway.
